Here at Bailey Audiovisual we think a better term for home automation is home simplification.

Home automation can conjure up weird images about having a home full of robots taking care of all of the day to day activities around the home and for the most part sounds extremely expensive and over the top. While there’s almost nothing that you can’t do with proper home automation and the right installer it can be used to simplify your life at home in small ways too.

More than ever these days we have tables FULL of remotes to control all of the different boxes in our entertaining areas, theatres and living areas. From the TV to the AV receiver, foxtel box, apple TV, media players, DVD players, music streamer and the list goes on its extremely frustrating to have to switch back and forth between remotes to control the volume on one, then change the channel on another, set the inputs on another and so on and so forth.

With some very basic home automation, or the much more apt home simplification, you can have one remote or tablet interface where all of your devices can be easily controlled without the need to switch between anything. It’s simple, intuitive and looks much better than the clutter of remotes on the table.

Speaking of clutter it seems these days that walls around the home are filled with various electronic devices from security keypads to video intercoms, air conditioning control panels and more. To put all of them in places where they are convenient and easy to use leaves areas with barely any paint showing and a glow so bright you can use it as a nightlight.

Again with the magic of home automation or as we prefer – home simplification – selecting the right devices that can integrate together you can lose the “wall art” and combine everything in one interface that does everything. Best of all you can do whatever you want with it – stick it IN the wall so it sits flush, sit it on the wall on a removable magnetic charger so that you can bring it with you wherever you go (isn’t that just super convenient, no more getting up off the chair when you are comfy to answer the intercom or change the air-con temperature) or even table mount it.

And of course while its excellent for the small things in life if you want home automation for the big things that’s OK too! You can combine different services into the one interface and make them work together.

For example:

1) Combining motorised blinds and air conditioning control.

The automation controller can constantly monitor the current temperature. As soon as it goes over a set temperature it turns the air-con on and lowers the blinds so that the sun stays out and your house is cool before you get home at the end of the day.

2) Combining automated lighting, motorised blinds and a whole home audio system

This is particularly useful with children who just don’t want to get up in the morning! The automation controller is set with an alarm time when they need to get up. When the alarm goes off the automation system turns on the bedroom lights, opens the blinds to let the sun in and turns on the music system in the room loud enough to wake them up. The only way to turn the alarm off is by getting out of bed and pressing a light switch. No more snoozing the alarm from the comfort of bed. Of course you can also use it for your own alarm with some pleasant soothing music instead of the shriek of an alarm clock.

These are plenty of clever ways to use home automation for a range of reasons from basic simplification to energy saving.

Home automation may include;

  • Lighting control
  • Heating control
  • Cooling control
  • Audio control
  • Video entertainment
  • Energy efficiency monitoring and reporting
  • Switching appliances on or off
  • Automatically securing your home
  • Locking gates and doors
  • Controlling of blinds/curtains during different seasons
  • Pool temperature regulation

The options are simply endless.
